'The Vampire Diaries' Series News: No Certainty If Series' Upcoming Eight Season Will Be Its Last, Says Ian Somerhalder

While it is true that Damon Salvatorre is finally bidding Mystic Falls goodbye, this doesn't mean that "The Vampire Diaries" will take a bow as well.

This is Ian Somerhalder's clarification after inadvertently causing panic to the fans of "The Vampire Diaries" after announcing that the show's eight season will be his last.

"We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice," said Somerhalder, who plays the fan-favorite character of the vampire series, Damon Salvatorre, as he spoke with the reporters at a Q&A at Nashville's Walker Stalker Con.

However, earlier this week, realizing that he had created some confusion, Somerhalder turned to Twitter to clarify his misunderstood statement.

"Hey all, so… Last weekend I talked to an audience at a Q&A about the end of #TVD and how excited I was to make what I believe — my last year — be as great as possible. Somehow in my infinite wisdom and end-of-season foggy brain, I managed to make it sound like the show was coming to an end," the actor said in his Twitter post.

The actor went on explaining that only CW and WB call the shots when the series will end, and the people who are in authority to make the decision hasn't made one yet as to what the fate of the series will be after its upcoming eighth season. With this, he encouraged the fans of "The Vampire Diaries" to calm down and see how the wind blows.

"… So let's take things one step at a time: Season 7 wrap, vacation, lots of sleep, let the writers get started on Season 8, and then we'll all see where we go from there. Until then, much love," he said as he ended his post.

While the fate of Damon Salvatorre and "The Vampire Diaries" after its upcoming season 8 is still up in the air, fans can, at least, relish the fact that they can still see Somerhalder, his fangs, witty one-liners, and enchanting appeal for, at least, one more season.

Meanwhile, "The Vampire Diaries" will have its season 7 finale episode on May 13. The show has already been renewed for its eight season run, but no exact date has been announced as to when it will return.
