'The Voice' Season 9 Release Date, Cast News: Rihanna Joins Gwen and Pharrell as Season 9's Key Advisor

Pop icon Rihanna will join NBC's reality television singing competition "The Voice" on its upcoming 9th season.

The 27-year-old singer will be featured as key advisor to aspiring singers. She will be following in the footsteps of today's popular names in entertainment like Taylor Swift and Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin in helping out Season 9's judges Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams.

The network broke out the news last week by NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt at the Television Critics Association semi-annual press tour in Beverly Hills, California.

"We landed Rihanna to be the key advisor to all the coaches this fall," Greenblat ttold reporters. "This is one of music's true supervisors coming on board to influence the lives and careers of the performers."

Earlier rumors indicated that The Voice executives have been courting the "American Oxygen" performer to join as a panelist in the competition.

"The producers feel the best chance they have is with Rihanna and they would love that because they haven't had a black female judge yet, and the audience she would bring would be amazing and they know she would be incredible," an insider for HollywoodLife.com revealed.

The Barbadian songstress is no stranger to reality TV shows. She previously co-produced "Styled to Rock," a competition which focused on fashion designing. Her latest involvement on the NBC show was during her promotional performance for her hit single "Diamonds" during the Season 3 of the show, last 2012.

"The Voice" Season 9 premieres Sept. 21.
