'The Walk' spoilers; Live action movie in 3D

Wednesday, August 7, 1974, a magnificent feat unfolded in Lower Manhattan, New York. A French tightrope artist named Philippe Petit walked on a wire in between the Twin Towers. He did not have a net or a harness. He did not have anything to ensure his safety and guarantee his survival. All he had was his determination to conquer "the walk," which he did quite successfully.

The film about this fateful day will be directed by Robert Zemeckis who helmed the films "Forrest Gump" and "Cast Away." Zemeckis shot the entire film in live-action 3D. This will undoubtedly amplify viewer experience and have them in close proximity to the walk itself. The trailer gives the viewers a peak at the vertigo-inducing heights the film will take them.

The film has an interesting cast led by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who will play the titular role of Philippe Petit. Veteran actor Ben Kingsley will play Papa Rudy, the mentor of Petit. Actress Charlotte Le Bon will play Annie, the girlfriend of Petit at the time. There are other relatively new actors in the film like Ben Schwartz, James Badge Dale, and Clément Sibony that complete the group.

In a few behind-the-scenes photos, Gordon-Levitt practices his walk as he is mentored by the real-life Philippe. There is a green screen that will eventually become New York back in the 70s. The plain green screen can be seen side by side with added visual effects. The film was shot in Montreal the previous summer.

The film has recently been selected to open the 53rd New York Film Festival on September 25. "The Walk is surprising in so many ways," said Kent Jones, the chairman and director of the film festival. Zemeckis was honored and very grateful that his film was selected.

The Walk will hit movie houses everywhere on Oct. 9, 2015.
