'The Walking Dead' News, Update: Series Creator Robert Kirkman Talks About the Future of the Zombie-Slaying Show

Earlier last week, Robert Kirkman, the creator and executive producer of AMC's hit post-apocalyptic TV drama series "The Walking Dead," sat with Marc Maron for his WTF podcast session.

Via Variety.com, Kirkman revealed to Maron that although the show is enjoying a massive amount of TV ratings and following from fans, it certainly must come to an end.

"It's a very popular show, and [the executives at AMC] seem to want it to go for 50 seasons. And it may go for 50 seasons, but there is definitely an end point at some point," Kirkman told Variety. "The idea is that this story that's longer than it has any business being, but it's that length and watching those characters evolve over that time that's gonna make it be this piece, that when it's all done, you'll look back on it and be like 'what the hell, I thought they were just killing zombies. There's totally an arc here and a thing going on, and I didn't think the story was about this!'"

The host asked his guest further on the possibility that the series will consider solving the "zombie problem" once and for all. The 36-year-old comic book writer appears to have actually considered the said scenario.

"Maybe. You never know. I do hope that 'The Walking Dead' goes on long enough that when it ends, it's like, 'good thing we took care of those zombies,'" he told Maron.

When they discuss the issue of further expanding the TWD universe by investigating the zombie outbreak in other countries, Kirkman said that "we may eventually explore that."

"But to me, it's about finding water," he explained. "It's about building a fence — when you make it bigger, that's when it gets less interesting to me."

"The Walking Dead" Season 6 is slated to premiere Oct. 11 on AMC.
