'The Walking Dead' Season 6 News, Spoilers: Maggie to Play a Bigger Role; Norman Reedus Suffers Injury During Filming

This Sunday's episode of AMC's zombie apocalypse series "The Walking Dead" saw the much-anticipated reunion of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), two of the original survivors from season 1, who have not spent much time together onscreen in the current season.

The latest episode, titled "The Next World," showed a newly motivated Rick, fresh from the death of his former flame Jessie Anderson (Alexandra Breckenridge) and the shooting of his son Carl (Chandler Riggs) in the midseason premiere, and Daryl heading out for a scavenging road trip that turns tricky when they find that they are not the only survivors who are after a truckfull of much-needed supplies.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Reedus was injured during the making of "The Next World." In one of the scenes in the episode, Daryl reaches into a broken vending machine to get some some soda. While shooting that scene, Reedus reportedly cut his finger on a shard of glass.

"Why am I always getting hurt?" the actor asked EW shortly after. "I get hurt all the time. I feel like I should have like football pads on at all times, even when I'm just walking around."

Meanwhile, as fans of the "Walking Dead" comics know, the series is about to become a whole lot bigger with the addition of a new group of survivors led by the long-awaited character Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). As they also know, Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) will soon step up to lead the Alexandrians.

Cohan recently sat down with EW and revealed that her "The Walking Dead" character will be taking charge, just as she does in the Robert Kirkman comics. According to the actress, Deanna Monroe (Tovah Feldshuh), the former Alexandria leader who died in the midseason premiere and emerged as a walker (and killed — again) in this Sunday's episode, saw that Maggie has what it takes to lead the group. As the episodes unfold, viewers have also seen that Rick is beginning to realize that Deanna was right and that Maggie is capable of dealing with certain individuals in the group in a way that he can't.

"So we have this sort of combined approach to a lot of the future challenges that we'll see this season, and it's fantastic," Cohan revealed.

The new character, Jesus (Tom Payne), who was introduced in the latest episode, will act, along with Maggie, as a check against Rick's leadership in Alexandria. Jesus, who acts as an adviser to both Rick and Maggie in the comics, will help the two lead and rebuild Alexandria.

"Going forward, we're reunited and stronger, but as a group we need to expand — not just with babies, but we need to expand, and we're going to go out into a new territory that's going to really open up the next level of the show," Cohan explained. "You've seen the group look for new safeholds, but the next place we find is going to be the beginning of the show as we've come to know it."

"The Walking Dead" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
