'The Witcher 3' DLC Packs Xbox One, PS4, PC Release Date News: CD Projekt Red CEO Explains Free Expansion Packs

Game developer studio CD Projekt Red has announced that they are intending to give off 16 expansion packs for free for their upcoming RPG, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

The studio's co-founder and joint CEO Marcin Iwinski revealed the reason behind the content giveaway. In a nutshell, Iwinski, as well as the rest of CD Projekt, just want to make a difference in the already "steeply priced" DLC gaming market.

"Because people just paid full price for our game," Iwinski told IGN. "We owe them."

"Yeah, we are making a statement," the studio head continued. "We, as gamers, would like to be treated this way, 'Hey, give me free DLC.' It doesn't have to be something huge. And I'm saying we aren't giving out huge stuff, we aren't giving tens of hours of storyline here, we are giving small bits of pieces that don't cost a lot. And I think people would feel better about our game, and, so, they will enjoy the adventure even more."

Apparently, giving away these contents for no charge could also help put a stop in the proliferation of the pirated copies of the game.

"Maybe the ones who thought about pirating would not pirate it," Iwinski speculated. "Maybe the ones who wanted to trade it back and get something else will keep it on the shelf. That'd be great -- I would like this to happen and if not that's fine as well. I hope they'll have fun."

The CEO further revealed that a lot of publishing houses approached them to make a multiplayer version and integrate other major tweaks in their franchise to which they strongly disagree with.

"We said, 'No, no, it's about Geralt. We have the books, we have the lore. It's true, it works, it's consistent," Iwinski declared.

The Witcher 3 is slated to launch this May 19 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Gamespot.com, who also picked up the story, said that the first DLC bundles for the title would come out later this year and will feature the Temerian Armor Set (horse armor) as well as the Beard and Hairstyle Set pack for the main character Geralt.
