Tom Cruise Wants to Make 'Top Gun 2'

American A-list actor, Tom Cruise has said he is looking forward to making "Top Gun 2," as a follow-up to his highly successful 1986 high-speed naval aviation classic.

The actor played volatile fighter pilot Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in the aerial action film that grossed $357 million at the U.S. box office, making it the year's highest earning movie. Cruise stated that he would like to get back into the flying action.

"It would be fun. I would like to get back into those jets," the 53-year-old action star told Reuters.

While it has not been confirmed whether the actor will have a role in the planned sequel, Cruise has insisted he would prefer "Top Gun 2" to be shot like the first one without using any CGI jets.

Director Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the first film, has been lobbying to make a sequel for years, even before original director Tony Scott committed suicide in 2012.

Bruckheimer told the Huffington Post in April last year he was looking into a concept story of fighter pilots versus unmanned aerial drones.

Collider interviewed Skydance Productions CEO David Ellison last month, who confirmed pre-production for the sequel was already underway, incorporating Bruckheimer's storyline of the nearly obsolete naval aviation pilots battling for relevancy against the ubiquitous drones.

The follow-up movie is geared towards exploring the end of the fighter pilot era vis-à-vis the current technology of drone warfare, with Maverick's character navigating a major change in profession from a hot shot pilot 30 years earlier to in the present time.

The as-yet-unscheduled "Top Gun 2" will be written by Justin Marks, who did the screenplay for "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li."
