'Top Gun 2': Tom Cruise to Return as Maverick

Three decades after what was to be his break-out role as a dashing, skilled fighter jet pilot, actor Tom Cruise is now more than likely to return as Maverick in the highly-anticipated sequel to his 1986 film, "Top Gun," currently referred to as "Top Gun 2."

The person to broke the news is co-producer and Skydance CEO David Ellison, who also happens to be a pilot himself, during a press junket for "Terminator Genisys" on Friday.

"Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now," Ellison said. "He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today."

"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick," he went on. "It is I don't think what people are going to expect, and we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon. But like all things, it all comes down to the script, and Justin is writing as we speak."

With Cruise's involvement seemed to be confirmed, it remains to be seen by fans as to how the movie will showcase the character that should now be 30 years older from his original appearance.

Other than the one mentioned above, Ellison revealed that the upcoming title will be in 3D and IMAX.

"Absolutely, I think this is a movie that should be in 3-D and in IMAX, and again something that you can shoot practically. As everyone knows with Tom, he is 100 percent going to want to be in those airplanes shooting it practically," he continued.
