“Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon” remained at the top of the box office this weekend once again. Transformers 3 raked in $47 million for a total of $261 million, making it the highest grossing film of 2011 so far.

The film, starring Shia Labeouf, has proved that big morphing robots, “moon-tastic” scenes, and lots of special effects are enough to draw massive crowds despite a lackluster plot.

The movie, closing in on its second week, is one out of only four others that have surpassed the $200 million grossing mark for what has been a slow 2011 for Hollywood.

“The Hangover Part II” is in second place this year and has collected $250.8 million nationwide. At number 3 is “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” with $236.2 million. And finally in fourth place is “Fast Five” with $208.7 million.

The top performing films for this July 8-10 weekend are “Horrible Bosses,” starring Jennifer Aniston, at number two with $28 million; Kevin James' comical “Zookeber” with $21 million at number 3; “Cars 2” at number four; and “Bad Teacher” in fifth place.

Anticipated movies for this summer include the new Harry Potter movie, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” on July 15, and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” starring James Franco, which opens on August 5.
