'Transformers: Devastation' – A Game that Brings Back 1980s Cartoons to Life

Even video games are going retro. One example is the recently revealed "Transformers: Devastation" game, developed by Platinum Games and published by Activision, which was shown off during E3 2015. According to reports, the third-person hack-and-slash action game is a product of a combined team of developers who worked on "Bayonetta" and "Legend of Korra."

The retro part of the game, however, is what is likely to make it more attractive to kids of the 1980s, particularly those who grew up the "Transformers" animated series. The game makes use of cel-shaded graphics which brings players back to when they were watching the TV series, and before the "Transformers" movie franchise.

The game's developers, according to the Forbes report, injected decent combat mechanics to the game, which makes it all the more interesting for players. A recently released gameplay trailer showed playable Autobot characters which included Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Wheeljack, Grimlock and of course Optimus Prime, in their cel-shaded glory, as they battled it out with Decepticon. The fights are set in 3D environments, and the Autobots can easily switch from vehicle to robot mode during any of the fights.

A report in Tech Times noted how Platinum Games was able to bring old-style graphics and have these blend in with the 3D environments in the game.

The game is reportedly a part of the "Transformers: Generations" toy line of Hasbro, but this particular game was more patterned after the TV series. Guaranteed to add an extra thrill for fans is the fact that the old voice actors in the series have returned to reprise their roles in the game, such as Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, Dan Gilvezan as Bumblebee, Michael Bell as Sideswipe, Gregg Berger as Grimlock and Frank Welker as Megatron and Soundwave.

No release date has been set, but the game is set to be released within the fall. It will be available for Windows PC, current-generation consoles PS4 and Xbox One, and older consoles such as PS3 and Xbox 360.
