Troy Davis Story: Michael Moore Calls Georgia a 'Murderous State'

Michael Moore urges public to ban Georgia's economy in response to Troy Davis's execution

Controversial filmmaker, author, and political activist Michael Moore has urged the public to boycott Georgia’s economy in response to Troy Davis’s execution yesterday.

The self described “most hated man in America” is one of many celebrities, along with Alec Baldwin and Kim Kardashian, to speak out concerning the contentious execution of Davis.

Describing Georgia as a “murderous state,” Moore has requested that Grand Central publishing pull his ninth book, first memoir entitled Here Comes Trouble from all Georgia bookshelves.

Later informed that his publishers refused to pull the book from Georgia’s bookshelves, the Academy Award winner retorted via tweet that he will donate all royalties received from book sales in Georgia to the Innocence Project, an organization dedicated to exonerating wrongfully accused people.

“The Innocence Project, which uses DNA to exonerate people who have been wrongfully convicted, is calling on the state legislature to enact a moratorium on the death penalty to restore justice in the state,” said Paul Cates, Director of Communications for Innocence Project.

Moore also tweeted Friday afternoon that he will donate two voter registration drives to Georgia, because in the past year there were 600,000 unregistered African American voters in the state.

“I encourage everyone I know to never travel to Georgia, never buy anything made in Georgia, [and] to never do business in Georgia,” Moore stated on his website.

Moore’s vigilance serves as a reaction to what many see as an unjust execution of Troy Davis, accused of murdering police officer Mark MacPhail in Savannah, Georgia in 1989. Davis’s trial, which has dragged on for twenty years, proved controversial due to extensive doubt surrounding evidence against Davis.

Brian Robinson, spokesman for Georgia’s Governor Nathan Deal, thinks Moore’s lashings are simply a publicity stunt.

“It’s tragic that he would use our criminal and justice system for self promotion,” Robinson told The Christian Post, adding “I know nothing will come of it.”

Moore urges all Americans “with a conscience” to do everything in their power to halt Georgia’s economy.

Georgia’s government remains un-phased, as Moore’s tirade has not extended far beyond a rant on his website.

“You could fit all of Michael Moore’s followers into an anthill,” said Robinson.
