Twitter Releases 'Hottest' Topics for 2011

For those wondering what were the most talked about topics of the year, Twitter has released the “hottest” topics of 2011.

In 2011, Twitter has become one of the most useful tools for communications and promotion. It played an important role in many major events in 2011: from the uprising in the Middle East to covering the latest news about the iPhone 4S.

Some of the top topics won’t come as a surprise to those who have spent a great time on Twitter and following the news of the year.

When it comes to the topic of actors, Charlie Sheen was the most talked about celebrity. The former “Two and a Half Men” star dominated the news with his high-profile arrest and firing from the popular sitcom, which made him the highest paid actor on television.

The hashtags on Twitter are community-driven to create groups on Twitter for tracking a specific topic. So it will also come as no surprise that the most relevant Hashtag was #Egypt.

Egyptian protesters used Twitter to develop their own organized community and propel their uprising in the country, eventually forcing Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak – who was ranked first in the “World News” topic -- to resign his post.

Surprisingly, YouTube sensation Rebecca Black was the most talked about music artist on Twitter this year. Black’s song “Friday” spread through the Internet and garnered the pop star plenty of media attention, despite her video being derided by many critics and mocked by viewers who named it the “worst song ever.”

Other subject that topped their respective category was the NBA’s Rashard Lewis; Elizabeth Taylor in the actress category; Cairo for cities and countries; and the Mac App store for Tech.
