There's a popular motivation poster from the '70s that features a kitten barely hanging onto a bar with its front paws. The words "Hang in There, Baby!" encourage the kitten, and the viewer, to not give up, to just hold on a little longer.

Mercury the cat embodies the spirit of "Hang in There, Baby" – dogged determination in the face of adversity – even though it's impossible for him to hang on.

Mercury's owners found him when he was a few days old. His eyes were still shut, and his front two legs and all but one of the toes on one back leg were missing. They believe that the kitten lost his limbs to a weed whacker while neighbors were working in some tall grass.

The owners cleaned Mercury's wounds and nursed him to a full recovery. Since he's still growing, he's too young to be fit with a prosthetic.

So in the meantime, little Mercury does the best he can with what he has: two hind legs and an indomitable spirit of discovery and play. Over Christmas, Mercury got a set of cat stairs, and here he is attacking them like any other cat.
