U.S. Immigration News: Federal Judge Orders Government to Turn Over Documents That Led to Decision of DACA Cancellation

A federal judge has ordered President Donald Trump's government to reveal the internal deliberative documents that led it to cancel the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).

According to reports, Judge William Alsup has ordered that the records be turned over not later than Oct. 27 and that the government must appeal promptly in the event it wants to challenge the order.

The court's ruling was a result of several lawsuits filed by different parties, including the University of California and its president, DACA author and former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, the state of California and local jurisdictions, all of whom question the government's move to end DACA.

The documents being ordered for turnover include all emails, letters, memoranda, notes, media items, opinions and other materials directly or indirectly considered in the final agency decision to rescind DACA.

DACA was an Obama immigration program that protected residents who entered the USA illegally as children from deportation. The program was meant as an interim relief to address 11 million undocumented residents, protecting 800, 000 under it.

While Trump invalidated the said program last month, he has announced recently that he is willing to be lenient on DACA beneficiaries on certain conditions. In an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity last Oct. 11, Trump claimed that he understands the plight of the DACA beneficiaries. While he is willing to fix the issue, the POTUS has stressed that it will only happen if he gets something in return.

"I fully understand it. But if we're gonna do something, we have to get something in return. And what I want is tremendous border regulation, I want the wall, and we're gonna get other things, and we're gonna see if we can work something out...Now, whether or not we do, I don't know. But it would be wonderful to solve the DACA problem," he told Hannity in the interview.
