'Under the Dome' to end after season 3 on September 10

CBS has decided not to renew its summer thriller "Under the Dome" for a fourth season and instead end the series next week after season 3.

Under the Dome, a series based on a Stephen King story, will air its finale on Sept. 10 and end with its third season. The series was originally planned to conclude two years ago, according to Entertainment Weekly (EW).

The Chester's Mill residents, who suddenly found themselves trapped under a dome-shaped force field, will finally see the end of their miserable situation on Sept. 10. The lives of the trapped residents were followed closely in the series, the Inquisitr reports.

Like fish trapped inside a small bowl, the residents of Chester's Mill found themselves isolated from the outside world with no way of communication. They were unable to use the radio, cellphones, and Internet services. It was later on revealed that mysterious alien forces were responsible for putting the town under the dome, the report relays.

"Two years ago, Under the Dome broke new ground in the summer and became an instant hit on CBS, as well as with viewers around the world," EW quotes CBS Entertainment's chairperson Nina Tassler. "…We're excited to present the final chapter in Chester's Mill as the story comes full circle, with the Dome coming down as dramatically as it went up."

Tassler had previously hinted that Under the Dome was going to end after the third installation. In addition, CBS revealed that the series ender will feature a big clash between two groups of residents in which some will perish. As the thriller comes to an end, the mystery of the dome will finally be known.

Under the Dome was originally planned to be run as a limited series, but CBS later decided to renew it for another season. Producers eventually found a way to keep the story running until its third season, the report details.

There are some fans of Stephen King, however, who think Under the Dome was stretched too far beyond necessity. Still, there were some fans who chose to stick with the "mini-series" until the very end.
