'Underground' Season 2 Air Date, Cast Updates and Spoilers: EP John Legend to Recur in Season 2 as Frederick Douglass

WGN's "Underground" is gaining new traction with its stellar list of guest stars and recurring characters for its second season. This time, Oscar-winning musician and Grammy award winner John Legend has signed up for a key role in the American drama's Season 2.

John Legend will be playing real-life historical figure Frederick Douglass, a famous abolitionist and author from the 19th century. Douglass was widely celebrated for his progressive political views. Born into bondage himself, he grew up to become a prominent leader in the antislavery movement and became the first African-American citizen nominated for the vice presidency in the United States.

Legend joins the long list of historical figures featured in "Underground" Season 2. It was earlier reported that "Under the Dome" star Aisha Hinds will be taking on a recurring role as Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist better known for being an armed scout and spy for the American army. Chris Chalk, on the other hand, will play renowned civil rights activist William Still, while Sadie Stratton is notorious slave trader Patty Cannon. Incidentally, Legend is also executive producer of "Underground," created and written by Misha Green and Joe Pokaski.

What the show is all about

"Underground" follows a group of slaves who are trying to gain freedom in the North via the Underground Railroad in Antebellum Georgia. It portrays their ineffable struggle for freedom as civil war turns the corner in American history.

During the show's season finale, the audiences were introduced to Harriet Tubman, the hero who had begun the Underground Railroad journeys. She's expected to play a major role in the upcoming "Underground" Season 2, which the executive producers revealed would stray away from the more personal struggles of the slaves and into a more historical perspective on the rise of the civil rights.

What to expect for Season 2

In fact, the slave escape thriller has deeply resonated with the American audience, as evidenced by its high demo ratings. For its second season, the "Underground" producers set their eyes on intertwining its emotional value with a more historical lens to be able to expand its stories.

In an interview with Deadline, Joe Pokaski revealed that "Underground" Season 2 will be looking at the Underground Railroad less as a mere means to the North and more as a network that would later on ignite the civil rights movement in America. They expect the "Underground" universe to get bigger as more historical figures debut on the show and as its narrative weaves itself into history.

"Underground" Season 2 will air March 9, 2016 on WGN.
