"Underwater" centers on an underwater scientific crew who must fight for survival after a disastrous earthquake destroys their underwater station. They must navigate through two miles of the dangerous ocean floor in order to make it to safety. The upcoming film is described as an underwater version of the 1998 apocalypse movie "Armageddon," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Should the deal push through, Stewart will be playing the film's lead character – a jaded and hardened crew member.

The actress was catapulted to international stardom for her role as Bella Swan in the worldwide hit "The Twilight Saga" film franchise. However, since then, the actress has largely avoided commercial film projects in favor of independent ones, including "Cloud of Sils Maria" in 2014 and "Equals" in 2015.

Aside from starring in big-budget films like "Snow White and the Huntsman" and playing a supporting role in the award-winning movie "Still Alice," Stewart also recently appeared in Woody Allen's "Café Society," Billy Lynn's "Long Halftime Walk" and the psychological thriller "Personal Shopper." The actress also appears in the upcoming Lizzie Borden biopic "Lizzie" with Chloë Sevigny.

The Chanel brand ambassador will have a busy filming schedule in the coming months since she also in negotiations to star in a biopic about author JT LeRoy along with actors James Franco and Helena Bonham Carter.
