USCIRF Completes Visit to China
The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) completed its trip to China this week and returned to United States to review their two weeklong visit.
The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) completed its trip to China this week and returned to United States to review their two weeklong visit.
During the high-profile trip to China, the delegation led by USCIRF Chairman Michael Cromartie held meetings from Aug. 14 to Aug. 28.
Cromartie, who was recently elected as a new Chair for 2005-2006, was not able to make any comments regarding the trip. He did say, however, that the Commission would be issuing a statement and report on the trip in the days and weeks ahead.

According to a statement made by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during her trip to Beijing in July, the USCIRF trip to China had been a high priority for the Bush Administration.
The trip was first agreed by the United States and China during the December 2002 U.S.-China bilateral human rights dialogue.
Created in 1998 by the U.S. Congress in the International Freedom Act of 1998, the commission is responsible for monitoring and assessing religious freedom in various countries was. The group of nine appointed Commissioners also advises the President, the Secretary of State, and the Congress on the ongoing efforts to “promote religious freedom and related human rights around the world.”
