By "dysfunctional relationships" Hirst could have referred to Ragnar Lothbrok's (Travis Fimmel) shaky and unstable connection with some of the people close to him. For one, there's the unpredictable Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard). Although the boat builder showed his undying loyalty to the new King of Denmark in the previous season, Floki still haven't overcome the grudge he felt for his old friend.

Ragnar's mighty son Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) is also teased to coerce with his father's will as he'd grown older. In each day, Bjorn will draw even closer to Rollo (Clive Standen) as he sees him as a fitting father figure.

As for the scale of the of the returning drama, Hirst went on to say that fans will see a grander season in terms of the battle between the mighty Northmen and their foes.

"We keep increasing the scale as they did historically. We started with one long boat and 30 warriors attacking an isolated monastery and Paris involves 100 boats and 3,000 warriors," he said.

A promotional summary for History Channel's "Vikings" Season 3 was posted on TV Line and it reads:

"With the promise of new land from the English, Ragnar leads his people to an uncertain fate on the shores of Wessex ... Ever the restless wanderer, Ragnar is searching for something more, and he finds it in the mythical city of Paris. Rumored to be impenetrable to outside forces, Ragnar and his band of Norsemen must come together to break down its walls and cement the Vikings legend in history."
