Ving Rhames Stars in Newly Released Christian Film

The inspiring drama "Saving God" released on DVD Tuesday and will be one of ten Christian films shown free at the weeklong Orlando Christian Film Festival.

Starring Hollywood actor Ving Rhames, "Saving God" was produced by Clear Entertainment and Cloud Ten Pictures – best known for the "Left Behind" movie series.

The feature length film has been touted by critics as a "gripping" and "heart-wrenching" movie with a "riveting" story line.

"Saving God" centers around the efforts of convict turned pastor Armstrong Cane (Rhames) to rebuild the community he left behind after serving 15 years in prison for manslaughter. While battling to keep on the right path, Cane works to re-energize the church his late father once served and fights to save a young man from a life of drugs and violence.

"One of the biggest struggles for most Christian films, is how to present the gospel without slowing the story down or come off as too preachy," noted Scott Green of OneWayFilms.net. "But in the case of Saving God, the gospel that is presented is a part of the story, and it doesn't take away from nor slow anything down. Instead, it becomes one of the feature focal points without shoving it in your face."

Movie bloggers were especially surprised to hear that Rhames, well known in Hollywood for playing bad boy characters in movies including "Pulp Fiction" and the "Mission Impossible" series, was playing a man who walks with God, rather than away from him.

"The character I'm playing, I know him," Rhames, who is a Christian himself, told the MTV Movies Blog. "For me, it's been a blessing to do this project."

Rhames' presence was also celebrated as a blessing by the producers, who were especially excited to have Rhames on board for the project, as well as actors Dean McDermott and Ricardo Chavira.

"[A]ll have delivered extraordinary performances," testified Clear Entertainment Chairman and CEO Domenic Serafino.

Cloud Ten Pictures CEO André van Heerden predicts that the movie will have an impact on many of those who watch it.

"The cast, the story and the redemptive theme are precisely what we've been striving to produce and find," he stated. "It's going to reach a lot of people."

The movie has already been shown to about 500 ministers connected to Urban Ministries, one of the largest African American ministries in the United States.

Van Heerden told Celebrity News Service that he hopes members of Urban Ministries' network of about 40,000 churches will be encouraged to see the movie.
