Virginia Lacrosse Player Sentencing: 25 Years for Murdering Girlfriend

It has been announced that 25-year-old George Huguely will be sentenced in August after being convicted of the murder of his then 22-year-old girlfriend Yeardley Love.

Huguely was charged with second-degree murder and grand larceny for killing his girlfriend Yeardley Love during a drunken rage in 2010 at Virginia University. Both Huguely and Love played for the school's Lacrosse team. Love was set to graduate that semester.

Huguely did not appear in court Monday, but it was announced that the former college student could face up to 25 years in prison for the second-degree murder charge, although no more. Huguely could also face up to one year for stealing Love's computer after the attack. Huguely's lawyers made attempts to push for a retrial but were told that a retrial would not be up for discussion until a later date.

The formal sentencing will take place on August 30. Information kept from the media during the trial will also come into question on Thursday in a separate trial which will concern having the information released for "educational purposes."

"The evidence–including a video of Huguely's police interrogation and letters Huguely wrote to Love–were kept from the media and the public throughout the trial," ABC News reported.

The prosecution ruled that Love had been killed by having her head repeatedly slammed into the wall. While Huguely was convicted of the crime, he insisted that he had gone to talk to her and that she had continuously banged her own head into the wall.
