Warcraft Film Release Date, Plot Spoilers: Scheduled Date Revealed, Movie Takes Place Year Before World of Warcraft

A film based off of World of Warcraft, the popular video game franchise by Blizzard is scheduled for a March 11, 2016 release and will be filmed by Legendary Pictures and Atlas Entertainment, to be distributed by Universal Pictures.

The film's plot was initially thought to be set in the era of the first Warcraft game, "Warcraft: Orcs and Humans" but was then scrapped out of the notion that it might be too similar to the Lord of the Rings franchise with similarities to the orc and human factions. Also, the Warcraft series has seemingly become popular due to its Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game title "World of Warcraft" instead of its Real Time Strategy franchise.

Instead one of the film's producers and artist, Chris Metzen, has indicated the film will take place one year before World of Warcraft. The plot will then be told in the Alliance's point of view. There are also rumors that the film will revolve around Khadgar and Medivh during the first war. Rumors also point towards an early Arthas plot.

The film was first announced by Blizzard back in 2006, as a partnership project with Legendary Pictures. Filming, however, did not start until early this year with a trailer privately revealed during the 2013 San Diego Comic Con.

Plot details are scarce as actual production did not start until 2013. Metzen however, has mentioned as far back as 2007's BlizzCon that the main character will be a "kick-ass human" but will not be Varian Wrynn as in the comics. Metzen had also stated that the lore will be altered a bit for the sake of the film.
