Washington Wizards Wing Sheldon Mac Suffers Torn Achilles Tendon, Likely Out for the Season

Sheldon Mac's season has ended before it even began.

The Washington Wizards have confirmed that the second-year wing has suffered a torn left Achilles tendon and he has already gone under the knife to repair the damage. He is expected to miss six to eight months while he recovers from surgery and he's unlikely to return this season.

Mac went down with the injury in the second quarter of their preseason game against the Cleveland Cavaliers last Sunday and he had to be carried off the floor. Wizards guard Tim Frazier knew right away his teammate had torn his Achilles tendon.

"I knew after he talked to me and told me the symptoms at halftime. Obviously, for me to see it, I knew it because it happened to me. You kind of shed a tear because he was playing so well and had worked so hard all summer. But everything happens for a reason and he'll bounce back strong," Frazier said, via Yahoo Sports.

"You hear stories all the time like Kobe [Bryant], Rudy Gay right now, guys tearing their Achilles and coming back. Sheldon is going to do the same," he added.

Mac was a seldom-used backup last season. In 30 games, Mac averaged 3.0 points and 1.1 rebounds while playing 9.6 minutes a game.

The second-year pro did fairly well during training camp and the preseason, but he's not expected to play much this season since Bradley Beal is getting the lion's share of minutes at shooting guard while Jodie Meeks serves as his primary backup.

The Wizards have yet to decide what they want to do with his roster spot. Mac is owed $1.3 million this season, but the team will have to pay an additional $2.5 million in luxury taxes if they choose to waive him, per ESPN's Bobby Marks.
