'Wayward Pines' Season 1 News, Spoilers: Showrunner Explains Beverly's Death, Ethan's Family Headed to Pope's Town

The last episode on Fox's newest mystery TV drama series "Wayward Pines" was a rather shocking one when Ethan's (Matt Dillon) only hope of escaping from the titular town was killed.

The episode titled "Do Not Discuss Your Life Before" saw the Secret Service agent and his new friend Beverly (Juliette Lewis) running through the streets with the intention to leave Wayward Pines. The whole place was alerted to their escape plan as phones began ringing loudly in every residence of the area.

The duo split up and Beverly was unfortunately cornered. Ethan witnessed Beverly from afar getting strung up in the town square. Pope (Terrence Howard) spoke about not tolerating those "people who don't play by the rules." He then slit her throat.

Towards the end of the episode, Theresa (Shannyn Sossamon) and Ben (Tim Griffin) were seen heading their way to Idaho.

Show runner Chad Hodge recently wrote in a column for Entertainment Weekly to offer some explanation on Beverly's death and this is what he has to say:

"Think about it. How many of us would love to start over and forget the past? To be given permission not to have some huge 'important' life in the big, bad world? How many of us would love to live a simple life in a small beautiful town? 'You could be happy here, Ethan,' says Kate (Carla Gugino). Does she mean it? Hard to tell at this point. Did I almost convince you? Scary, right? But this is why we needed to kill Beverly Brown" (via EW).

For the meantime, the next episode titled "Our Town, Our Law," will reveal Pope's plan for the mother and son. Is it his intention to prevent them from reaching the town or is he luring them to it?

"Wayward Pines" Season 1 airs Thursday, at 9 p.m. on Fox.
