We Are God's App

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” 1 Peter 2:9-12

You and I are God’s app. When we put our faith in Jesus we were spiritually reprogrammed by God to have several uses for a world in desperate need to tap into. We have a priesthood functionality that allows those who are spiritually blind to see the light of Christ in us. When things go wrong in their lives that’s when many will look for the closest priest to them to help them find God. This is when the value of your priesthood functionality will be hard to resist, waiting for them to open and use.

As God’s apps we also have a purity functionality. We intentionally, “abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul” and seek to live a life so pure that though the unregenerate, “accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” Instead of blinding engaging in sin along with the rest of the world we wage war against that which wages war against our souls. It’s not that we are perfect (because we are far from it), but we are willing to battle against our own sinful tendencies instead of casually acquiescing to them. Those of the world don’t get this but, in a strange way, we gain their respect and often gain an audience for the gospel as a result.

Finally, we have a proclamation functionality that enables us to “declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” Here is when we proclaim the good news of how they can be saved from their sin and be redeemed from sin and reprogrammed into God’s “app.” By the way, if you struggle with this part of your functionality, download this video to your iphone (your literal one!) and show it to your friend. It is a five minute presentation of the GOSPEL that will blow you and them away.

Our purity functionality gets the world’s attention. Our priesthood functionality triggers a response to connect with God (and therefore us) when things go bad in their lives. Our proclamation functionality enables us to bring them into the fold through a simple presentation of the gospel combined with the power of the Holy Spirit (2 Thessalonians 2:13,14.)

The only bummer about being God’s app? We can’t be found in the Apple Store.
