Discounts of up to 50 percent off gift cards to major retailers like Best Buy, Walmart, Victoria’s Secret, Bass Pro Shops and iTunes are available online.

According to the TD Bank Holiday Shopping Poll released earlier this month, 64 percent of Americans say they plan to purchase a gift card this year.

The poll also forecasted that Americans will spend an average of $640 on gifts this season.

“With the majority of consumers looking to spend the same as last year, gift cards are a perfect option to keep holiday spending in check," said Nandita Bakhshi, Executive Vice President and Head of Products at TD Bank. "Giving a gift card reduces shopping stress, you spend exactly what you intend to, and are less likely to get caught up in the season and spend more money than planned."

Most gift card sellers reduce prices on their gift cards just so they can get rid of it, but some may try to scam you. Gift cards from iTunes range from $10 to $200 and average about 15 percent off. Most iTunes cards are digital and thus carry no shipping charges.

Best Buy gift cards are offered at up to a 25 percent discount. More than 120 gift cards for Bass Pro Shops are available at around 25 percent off, with cards carrying up to 50 percent off.

Walmart deals are sparse online, but the retailer will give away a $100 gift card with the purchase of any smartphone on Black Friday.
