What Does the Bible Say About Sex Before Marriage?

Sex, just like any of God's creation, is good (Genesis 1:31). It is not shameful or dirty but a beautiful act to be shared by couples (Proverbs 5:18–19) within the bounds of holy matrimony. But man has distorted this wonderful gift just like he did to all of God's creation.

Man's rebellious nature prompted him to come up with arguments to challenge God's law. Some justify that since man is a steward of creation, he can have dominion over his own feelings and use it. But that's exactly the point — man is merely a steward or manager who handles operations within the limits of the company's rules; in this case, God's law.

Others insist on doing whatever they want with their own body. But the Bible says that we don't own our bodies, that these are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19) and the members of Christ Himself (verse 15), and as such, are not meant for sexual immorality (verse 13).

The Bible considers sex outside marriage a disgraceful thing (Deuteronomy 22:13–21). Why? Because God created man in His own image (Genesis 1:27) that having more than one partner in life doesn't make us different from animals. Those who violate this law face several risks like contracting a disease.

The lure of desire is so strong especially among the young who think of doing it for love. Those who fall for this reasoning end up getting pregnant early or waste time moving from one relationship to another, which are useless pursuits (Psalm 39:4). This is why Paul admonishes young people to flee youthful lusts (2 Timothy 2:22).

Those who don't believe the Bible can talk to women who have had multiple partners throughout their lives. Most of them feel somewhat empty and have difficulty maintaining a normal relationship. That's exactly what God doesn't want for us but many refuse to listen.
