Who Will Be the Next Green Lantern – Chris Pine or Tyrese Gibson?

After Warner Bros. announced that the reboot of the "Green Lantern" will take on a new title, namely "Green Lantern Corps" at the recently concluded San Diego Comic Con, reports have started circulating about who will play the next superhero in the DC Cinematic Universe.

According to earlier reports, "Star Trek" actor Chris Pine is said to be circling the role of Hal Jordan, also known as the Green Lantern. A more recent report on IGN however, talked about another actor in the running for the role. The report said that Tyrese Gibson of "Fast & Furious" and "Transformers" films is currently in talks with Warner Bros. about the role and that he thinks he would be "the best Green Lantern."

According to the report, the actor has met with the studio twice already and that he is just waiting to "see what happens" next. If this report turns out to be true, he will be joining the ranks of African-American actors cast for superhero roles. His apparent interest in the role, however, is not just about race. In early January of this year, one of his fans made a fan art of the actor as the Green Lantern, which Gibson took interest in. Gibson himself shared the fan art via social media.

Gibson said that there was a community among his fans who have been discussing that Gibson would be "the best Green Lantern." Gibson added that because of this fan support, he would be willing to "commit" to the "process of seeing what's possible," the IGN report said.

"Green Lantern Corps" is far away from its release, which should be sometime in 2020, after the other major movies of the DC Cinematic Universe have been released. This gives Warner Bros. plenty of time to pick the right actor for the superhero role.

The 2011 "Green Lantern" movie which starred Ryan Reynolds was a flop in the box office, owing to bad screenplay, deviations from the comics, and overuse of CGI, among other things. Warner Bros. scrapped plans to make a sequel because of the movie's failure.
