Why Did Jesus Have to Die on the Cross?

A true Christian's favorite spiritual subject would not be the wrong practices observed by other religions or making comparisons about his or her own "holiness" with that of other people. The topic that a true follower of Christ gets excited about is Jesus and the sacrifices He went through.

That is the point of His coming to this world — to save us from our sins. Genesis 3:6 describes how man fell from God's grace through disobedience. It set off a chain reaction that drowned the world in chaos and despair brought about by man's selfishness and wickedness.

Most scholars would agree that the central theme of the Bible is Jesus. His coming had long been prophesied in the Old Testament. The prophet Isaiah described Him as a Redeemer (59:20) which means someone who will pay a "ransom."

This was confirmed in 1 Corinthians 6:20 when it declared that we were bought for a price. Galatians 3:13 further stated that man deserved to be hung on a tree because of his transgressions. But Jesus, who is blameless and without sin, being the Son of God, chose to become a curse by dying on the cross in order to redeem mankind.

Some would say, "Wouldn't it be easier for an all-powerful God to just forgive man's sins without having to sacrifice His Son?" He can do so but that would go against His nature as a righteous God (Psalm 33:5). Letting man get off the hook easily will no longer make Him righteous but a tolerator of sin — which cannot be.

Psalm 33:9 says, "For he spoke and it came to be; he commanded and it stood firm." While Matthew 24:35 reads: "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My Word will not pass away." God cannot contradict Himself. The words he spoke must come to pass. It's either we accept God or perish.
