It's a Cocker Spaniel! That's much of what is known about the male puppy adopted by Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The puppy is the latest addition to the Windsor family, though its breed was not immediately known. Officials have confirmed that puppy is in fact a male Cocker Spaniel.

There's no word yet on the dog's name.

According to reports, the pup was adopted through a family friend who is a breeder. Love of canines is nothing new to the royal family. Prince Charles and wife Camilla took in a Jack Russell terrier, whom they named Beth.

Queen Elizabeth II has five Corgis and four "dorgis," which are Corgi-Dachshund breeds. She has been a fan of that particular breed since receiving a Corgi puppy as a child. The names of her dogs are Emma, Linnet, Monty, Holly, Willow, Cider, Berry, Candy and Vulcan. Some believe that she inherited a few of the dogs when her mother passed.

Kate and Will's new puppy is sure to provide good companionship for Kate since William is currently on a military mission in the Faulklands. He will be stationed there as part of the military team for the next six weeks, while Kate remains at home, visiting her favorite charities.

A Palace aide told Us Magazine, "He belongs to a litter of Cocker Spaniels from one of Carole Middleton's friends near home. At first, they had just taken it home for a short period of time to see how they adapt. William and Catherine fell in love with the pup instantly, and it wasn't long before they decided to keep him."

"He's now part of the royal fold!" added the aide.

Fans of the royal couple have voiced their joy at the new addition.

"OMG guys, have you seen Prince William and Kate Middleton's new PUPPY?????? I WANT! (sic)" tweeted Cher Lee.

"Prince William & Kate's new puppy joins a long history of royal dogs," added Priya James.
