A woman aged 104 has lied about her age on Facebook because the social networking site has not been programmed to be able to cater for people as old as her.

Marguerite Joseph, who will soon be turning 105, has been a Facebook user for the past three years since she was just 101 years old. However, when she attempted to set up her profile she kept receiving an error message as it did not understand the age she was inputting.

That forced Marguerite to input her age as 99 years old.

Every year since she joined her age has remained stuck at 99 years as Facebook have failed to update their program to allow users who are 100 years old or older to enter their real birthdays.

As of this week the problem still exists, but Marguerite's case is gaining much more publicity in the hope that Facebook workers will finally sit up and take notice of the problem.

Marguerite's granddaughter has even tried to contact Facebook co-founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg in the past, in the hope that he would make sure the problem would be fixed. However, her efforts so far have been in vein, according to a Daily News report.

Granddaughter Gail Marlow has explained that Facebook's profile settings have a glaring oversight by not allowing users to input their age as far back as 1908 - when Marguerite was born.

"Every time I tried to change the settings to the right year, Facebook always came back with an unknown error message and would send us right back to a year she wasn't born in," said Gail, according to the Daily News.

"I would love to see her real age on Facebook. I mean in April she's going to be 105. It's special."

Despite being legally blind and hard of hearing, Marguerite, from Gross Pointe Shores, Mich., apparently loves using Facebook and uses the social networking site to keep up with the lives of her grandchildren and friends.

On her profile earlier this week Marguerite had 109 Facebook friends and 84 posted pictures.
