Woman Sues Fishbones Restaurant After Security Orders Her Out of Female Bathroom Thinking She Was a Man
A woman who was ordered out of the female restroom of a popular Fishbones restaurant in Detroit after security mistook her for a man is now suing the popular Greektown eatery for emotional distress and alleged civil rights violations.
"As I came out of the stall, this gentleman — who was a security guard — came in the bathroom, and before I was even completely out of the bathroom he grabbed me by the arms and pushed me up against the wall, told me that boys aren't allowed in this restroom," the woman, Cortney Bogorad, told WXYZ Detroit.
Bogorad, who wears her hair short like many males, admits that some people will mistake women like her with short hair for boys but they aren't.
"This could have happened to anybody. There are lots of females out there with short hair. Some people might think we're boys, but, at the end of the day, we're not," she said.
She said she has lived in Detroit all her life and had eaten at the Fishbones location multiple times prior to the Jan. 23 incident.
According to the case records of the Third Judicial Circuit Court of Michigan, the lawsuit was filed last Wednesday against International Market Place, which does business as Fishbones Rhythm Kitchen Café.
The Christian Post reached out to International Market Place for comment on the lawsuit Monday but a response was not provided at the time of this publication.
Bogorad told WXYZ that she filed the lawsuit because she doesn't want anyone else to suffer the embarrassment she suffered at being mistaken for a male.
