'Wonder Woman' Cast News: Connie Nielsen To Play Wonder Woman's Mother; Chris Pine Reveals World War I Setting

"Gladiator" (2000) actress Connie Nielsen has been cast as Wonder Woman's (Gal Gadot) mother in the 2017 film "Wonder Woman," Variety reports.

The 50-year-old Danish actress is set to play the role of Queen Hippolyta, the fictional DC Comics character and superheroine who is the leader of the Amazons and the mother of Wonder Woman/Princess Diana of Themyscira/Diana Prince and Donna Troy.

Nielsen has previously appeared in the films "Mission to Mars" (2000), "One Hour Photo" (2002), "The Hunted" (2003), "The Situation" (2006), and "Perfect Sense" (2011). She has also played various TV roles in "The Good Wife," "The Following," and "Law & Order: SVU."

"Wonder Woman," which will be helmed by Patty Jenkins and produced by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures, also stars Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, a USAF pilot who is rescued by and falls in love with the Amazon princess/heroine.

In a recent interview with the Toronto Sun, Pine talked about his character, saying, "Steve Trevor is a rogue-ish, cynical realist who's seen the awful brutish nature of modern civilization."

"He's a worldly guy, a charming guy and it's going to be a great, fun film," the actor said, adding, "There are some incredibly deep, interesting and morally relevant themes."

Pines also revealed that although Diana Prince/Wonder Woman first appeared as a superheroine from the World War II era, the version of the Justice League team member that is set to appear in the live action film will be coming from the First World War.

"It's a period we don't see often; it's usually World War II," Pines told the newspaper.

The actor added: "Our costume design is incredible. We have scenes with, like, 500 extras all in period dress. I'd never been on a film with extras casting as beautifully done as it is here."

"Wonder Woman" is scheduled for release on June 23, 2017.
