Although plot details for the standalone film are still scarce, earlier reports indicated that the overseeing creative director, Zack Snyder, wanted "Wonder Woman" as a "gateway" for the Justice League.

"She plays a super-important part," Snyder told Entertainment Weekly. "In a lot of ways, she's the gateway drug to the rest of the Justice League."

The character will meanwhile appear first in Snyder's highly-anticipated standoff film "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" on March 25, 2016 which will see Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill as the DC heroes.

The "Wonder Woman" film, on the other hand, is directed by Patty Jenkins with Snyder and Deborah Snyder as producers. Penning the script is Jason Fuchs, who worked with the studio on Joe Wright's "Pan."

The title is slated to hit the theaters on June 23, 2017.
