'X-Men' Spinoff Movie 'The New Mutants' in the Works

The "X-Men" cinematic universe is about to get even bigger. If reports are true, 20th Century Fox is working on a new spinoff title called "The New Mutants." The studio is set to expand the franchise by introducing solo films in 2016, with the likes of "Deadpool" and "Gambit" as well as the next "X-Men" film called "X-Men: Apocalypse."

According to a report in Deadline, 20th Century Fox has sealed a deal with up and coming director Josh Boone to co-write and helm "The New Mutants" movie. Boone is known for his box office hit "The Fault in Our Stars," a movie adaptation of a novel by the same title. The report said that Boone will write the screenplay with Knate Gwaltney.

"The New Mutants" is part of the "X-Men" comic series. It introduces a new breed of mutants who were born with special powers and undergo training to become super heroes. Initial reports about the new project only say that it will "explore a new part of the 'X-Men' universe," but one report on Cinema Blend predicts that it will take away some of the storylines from the comic series. The series includes characters such as Cannonball, Karma, Mirage, Sunspot and Wolfsbane. However, the report also noted that the studio may end up not including any or some of the characters at all.

Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuller Donner will produce the film. With Boone tied up in several other projects in the coming years, the Deadline report says that this X-Men project may materialize a couple of years from now. Kinberg expressed his excitement about having Boone on board.

"We're so excited to explore this new part of the 'X-Men' universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters," he said.
