Xbox Chief Phil Spencer Does Not Think Sony Will Ever Allow Cross-Platform Play

Fans of "Fortnite" know that there was a short time when game developer Epic accidentally but pleasantly allowed cross-platform play between Xbox One users and PlayStation 4 fans.

It has been a while since then, Xbox's chief Phil Spencer was not shy in pointing out that he loved it. He has advocated for cross-platform play since he announced the possibility during this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). However, a recent interview has revealed that it might never happen.

"We talk to Sony all the time. With Minecraft on PlayStation, we have to be one of the biggest games on their platform in terms of sales and gameplay," said Xbox boss Spencer in an interview with GameSpot. "Same with Nintendo. The relationship with Nintendo on this front has been strong. They've been great supporters and we continue to collaborate with them. But I think Sony's view is different. They should talk about what their view is..."

"Minecraft" is available for cross-platform play between Micrsoft's flagship console and Nintendo. The Japan-based gaming giant has been a big supporter of the feature thus far, and Spencer said that Nintendo has been determined to stand by their end of the bargain. Furthermore, their partnership looks to be going strong, and Spencer believes that there migh a be collaborative project with them in the future.

However, asked if Sony is anywhere near considering the possibility of cross-platform play, Spencer could not give a specific timeline. He believes that there is a possibility of it happening, but he also mused that something fundamental might have to change in Sony. At the moment, it does not seem like Sony will budge on their stand.

The bug that enabled cross-platform play in "Fortnite" has long since been fixed. By the memory is held close by the fans who were lucky enough to see what it would be like if they could play with their friends and family members on either Xbox One or PlayStation 4.
