Xiaomi Mi4 Specs and Features Review: Will New Smartphone Be a Real Competitor?

While the Western smartphone market is dominated by Apple and Samsung, things are largely different in the East, with the Xiaomi brand being the number one smartphone brand. The Chinese company had recently released its newest flagship offering, the Mi4.

The Xiaomi company is a fairly young firm, only having been founded in 2010 but they are slowly becoming popular in the West as well as a large foothold in China's smartphone market. While the Mi4 has already been available for a few months now, it has only been receiving some fairly good reviews from Western tech sites.

As it currently stands, Xiaomi is the third biggest mobile manufacturer in the world, lagging behind Apple and Samsung. One of the most prominent characteristics of the Xiaomi flagship line is its considerably high-spec offering coupled with its comparatively low price.

The Mi4 has a 5.0-inch touchscreen with a display resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD). Inside the phone is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset with a quad-core 2.5GHz processor and an Adreno 330 GPU. Two storage options are available, the 16GB and 64GB both with 3GB of RAM. The phone does not support microSD cards however.

It has a 13-megapixel rear facing camera with dual-LED flash and video recording capabilities up to 2160p@30fps. It's front facing camera is pegged at 8-megapixels. It runs on Android 4.4.3 Kitkat.

Without a doubt, the most impressive part about the Xiaomi Mi4 is its retail price. It retails in China for around $280 and getting one shipped to the United States might net some at less than $350. Still, considering the high-end nature of its hardware, you still pay one-third of the price you'd pay for a Samsung with the same specs.
