You Can Make A Difference

2 Corinthians 3:1-6 (NRSV)

Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Surely we do not need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you or from you, do we? You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, to be known and read by all; and you show that you are a letter of Christ, prepared by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are competent of ourselves to claim anything as coming from us; our competence is from God, who has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not of letter but of spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

Paul wrote, "You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, to be known and read by all."
- 2 Corinthians 3:2 (NRSV)

I love receiving letters. Every morning I listen for the sound of mail falling on the mat. Today I received a letter from a friend who has the gift of writing as if she were speaking to me. I hear her voice while reading her news. Her letters keep our friendship flourishing.

The Apostle Paul said something important about letters. He wrote to the Christians at Corinth to remind them that they were letters from Christ, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God.

I too need to remember that the only gospel many of my friends and neighbors will ever read is the one that I write by how I live my life. We can allow the Holy Spirit to work in and through us, so our lives can proclaim a message of God's love, care, and compassion.

Prayer: Lord, we confess that there are times when the letter of our lives conveys the wrong message. Forgive us and help us to be your faithful messengers, portraying Christ's likeness in all we say and do. As Jesus taught us, we pray, "Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen."*
