'Zombieland 2': Script in Active Development; Actors Set to Reprise Roles

The 2009 horror-comedy film "Zombieland" is reportedly getting a sequel, with a script being made and almost done by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese - both writers of the recent superhero film, "Deadpool."

"Zombieland 2 sits on the horizon with a hopeful greenlight coming relatively soon," says Wernick in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Most of the stars of the first "Zombieland" film have gone on to become big Hollywood names. Emma Stone, for one, recently starred in the Oscar-winning "La La Land," Abigail Breslin is a regular in the horror-comedy TV series "Scream Queens," while Jesse Eisenberg starred in many known films such as "The Social Network" in 2010 and in the recent "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice."

Wernick, however, acknowledged that reality and reveals that they are taking that into consideration. "It's just a matter of making our cast deals and making it for a budget number," he said in an interview with ComicBook.

"All the cast have become superstars now so, we made Zombieland with 20 million, so it's trying to fit that financial model into the sequel model so it makes sense for the studio and being able to pay the actors what they now get paid and deserve to be paid," Wernick adds.

Wernick also confirmed in the same ComicBook interview that Reuben Fleischer is already signed on and is confirmed to direct the sequel. However, the script itself is still in active development, but as the writer said, the cast have already read it and loved it.

In addition, Reese says that they keep telling Tom Rothman of Sony Pictures about "Zombieland 2."

"We're pestering him the way we pestered Fox on Deadpool. We're not letting it go. We really want to see Zombieland 2," he admits to ComicBook.

No details about the plot for "Zombieland 2" is known yet, and no release date is estimated as of this writing.

The first "Zombieland" also stars Amber Heard ("Justice League"), Bill Murray ("Ghostbusters") and director-producer Mike White, who also starred in HBO's comedy series "Enlightened."
