The World Evangelical Alliance has applauded the agreement reached this week by New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to cease all hostilities between the Khartoum government and rebel groups for 60 days as they work towards a durable end to the conflict in Darfur.

"We applaud this significant step toward peace in Darfur," said Geoff Tunnicliffe, the International Director of the World Evangelical Alliance. "We truly hope this process will lead to end the suffering of the people in Darfur."

The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) received Micah Network as its newest Global Partner this week, adding to its list of international partner organizations.

“We are very happy to announce that Micah Network has joined WEA as its newest Global Partner,” said Geoff Tunnicliffe, International Director of the WEA, in an announcement released on Nov. 16.

Micah Network is a group of some 300 Christian relief, development and justice organizations that work together to meet the needs of the poor and oppressed, proclaim the mission of the church, and advocate Biblical values to leaders and decision makers around the world. more >>

NEW YORK – Thousands of Christians from over 20 countries celebrated Micah Sunday yesterday, participating in festivals, prayer services and exhibitions all aimed at raising awareness of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and poverty.

Micah Sunday is an annual effort by Micah Challenge, a global campaign of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) and the Micah Network, to mobilize churches and Christians against poverty through unified gestures.

This year, Micah Sunday overlapped with “Stand Up,” an international anti-poverty event where millions around the world are attempting to break a world record on the number of people standing up against poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals. more >>

NEW YORK – Millions of people around the world and in New York will “stand up” together on Sunday, Oct. 15, in an effort to set an official Guinness World Record for the greatest number of people to stand up against poverty and for the UN Millennium Development Goals.

The signature event will be held at 6 p.m. in New York’s Time Square, where the famous New Year’s Eve ball will make its first-ever non-holiday appearance to lead the crowd in standing against poverty.

Similar gatherings are planned in dozens of other countries, including Sierra Leonne, where 300,000 people are expected to “Stand Up” against poverty during church services and attend a football match in the National practice stadium for the cause. more >>

This month, thousands of people across dozens of cities worldwide will take part in the largest campaigning day for peace in Darfur since the start of the conflict, the World Evangelical Alliance has announced.

Campaigners are urging those taking part in the Global Day of Action for Darfur on Sept. 17 to call on their governments to do more to protect civilians in the troubled region of Sudan.

”From Abuja, to New York, this will be a chance for people across the globe to show that they care about Darfur,” said Jill Savitt, Campaign Director of Human Rights First, one of the organizations coordinating the events. “September 17 is going to be a day of international solidarity to bring hope to the people of Darfur.” more >>

The World Evangelical Alliance has called on its members to observe the Global Day for Darfur next month and to participate in weeklong events leading up to the day of support for Darfurians.

"We cannot save the 400,000 whom we have already lost, but we can prevent further loss of life for the millions living on the cusp of death, battling starvation and militia attacks," said Geoff Tunnicliffe, International Director of the WEA, in a statement released on Friday. "The evangelical Christian community worldwide must show its compassion and demonstrate its faith by responding to this crisis."

The WEA head was among several prominent Christian leaders invited to speak at the Save Darfur Rally at Washington’s National Mall in April alongside other religious leaders, human rights activists, politicians, athletes and actors. more >>
