Andrew Murray ordained – May 9, 1848

This week marked the anniversary of when Andrew Murray, a notable Scottish Presbyterian missionary from South Africa known for his devotionals, was ordained.

Murray was ordained alongside his brother John by the Hague Committee of the Dutch Reformed Church, with the ceremony taking place on Andrew’s 20th birthday.

Murray heavily promoted mission work, helped to found the University College of the Orange Free State and the Stellenbosch Seminary, and was a prolific writer.

“Murray is best known today for his devotional writings, which place great emphasis on the need for a rich, personal devotional life,” explained the Christian Classics Ethereal Library.

“Several of his books have become devotional classics. Among these are Abide in Christ, Absolute Surrender, With Christ in the School of Prayer, The Spirit of Christ and Waiting on God.”
