VP Pence to social conservatives: there’s 'nothing compassionate about open borders'

Vice President Mike Pence spoke Saturday night at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s annual gala dinner at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington D.C., and argued that securing the southern border and building a wall is the morally appropriate response.

“There's nothing compassionate about refusing to change the laws that human traffickers use to take advantage of poor families. Those who would advocate open borders, free health care for illegal immigrants and making illegal immigration legal are making it easier for human traffickers to mistreat poor and vulnerable families. That is morally wrong. And that has got to stop,” he said.

Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson spoke at the same event Friday morning and argued that the idea of pushing God out of American public life is similar to “schizophrenia.”

James Dobson says media is not 'truthful' in reporting on migrant detention centers

Social conservative activist, radio host and psychologist Dr. James Dobson visited an immigration detention center in McAllen, Texas. Based upon what U.S. Custom and Border Patrol showed him, Dobson claimed that media reports of the facilities are untrue.

“Please believe me when I tell you that the media and leftist politicians have not been truthful about what is going on there. It is a human tragedy," he wrote.

Dobson then described the situation in terms similar to media reports.

“I noticed that almost none of [the detainees] were talking to each other. The children looked traumatized and frightened. Tears flooded my eyes as I stood before them. They had no toys or dolls, except for a few items bought by compassionate Border Patrol agents," he wrote.

“There are few provisions made to accommodate the children."

On Thursday, the Democrat-controlled U.S. House of Representatives voted to approve a Senate-passed measure that would provide $4.6 billion to address the surge of migrants coming to the border. The measure will be sent to Trump’s desk to sign.

Supreme Court declines to hear appeal on Alabama law banning dismemberment abortions

Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed a lower court ruling against a 2016 Alabama law that banned a certain abortion procedure.

The law would have made it illegal for abortionists to perform dilation and evacuation abortions that are performed between 13 and 24 weeks after the first day of a woman's last menstrual period.

Justice Clarence Thomas wrote a concurrent opinion, agreeing with the denial of appeal yet noting that he supported such laws.

“The notion that anything in the Constitution prevents States from passing laws prohibiting the dismembering of a living child is implausible,” wrote Justice Thomas.

Internet church sues over law in Tennessee that bans ministers ordained online from performing weddings

Universal Life Church, an online non-denominational religious organization that has ordained more than 20 million ministers around the world for free through their internet ministry, has sued the state of Tennessee over a law that bans online ministers from officiating weddings.

The lawsuit cited by the publication argues the law violates the First Amendment by discriminating against "certain religions or religious denominations." It also notes that the law "prefers" certain denominations by allowing some ministers to solemnize marriages while preventing those with "online ordinations."

Denmark launches new restrictions on parental divorce

Parents seeking a divorce in Denmark are now required to take a mandatory course and wait three months before they can separate.

The Danish Parliament agreed in March to implement a mandatory "reflection period" of three months and require parents who have children 18 years old and younger to take an online course before a divorce can be finalized.

The course is called ‘Co-operation After Divorce’ and enables parents to consider the ramifications of a relationship split, particularly through the eyes of their children, and explains how to communicate after divorce.
