Evangelical leaders and organizations are calling on Congress and the Trump administration to immediately address the needs of migrant children who are being deprived of basic needs in detention centers.
In an open letter to President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and Congress on Thursday, they wrote, “Jesus reserves some of his strongest words of judgment for those who subject children to harm.”
Signatories of the letter included Leith Anderson, president of the National Association of Evangelicals; Scott Arbeiter, president of World Relief; Doug Clay, General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, USA; Shirley V. Hoogstra, president of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities; and Russell Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.
The Republican-controlled Senate and Democrat-controlled House both passed different emergency spending bills this week and are now working on a compromise bill that leaders hope can pass both houses.
— 2020 Democrat presidential candidates hold first debate.
20 of the 24 Democrats running for president held the first debate of the 2020 election season on Wednesday and Thursday.
Former Obama Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro had a breakout performance, according to many pundits.
On immigration, Castro said he wants to decriminalize unauthorized entry into the U.S.
None of the Democrat candidates are pro-life. Castro expressed support for taxpayer funding for abortion, and in a likely flub said he supports tax funded abortions for "trans females," who are biological males.
— Democrat-controlled House panel debates whether to weaken landmark religious freedom law.
The Religious Freedom Restoration Act passed in 1993 with strong bipartisan, almost unanimous, support and was signed by Democrat President Bill Clinton. But now that some Christians have used that law to protect their freedoms to dissent from liberal acts related to abortion and same-sex marriage, Democrats are looking to limit the scope of that law.
The House Committee on Education and Labor held a hearing Tuesday titled “Do No Harm: Examining the Misapplication of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.”
If passed, the Do No Harm Act would decrease the number of federal laws and rules that RFRA could be applied to.
— Trump hailed as 'Good Samaritan' at evangelical grassroots summit.
Trump spoke Wednesday at the annual Road to Majority Conference hosted by the national evangelical grassroots organization Faith & Freedom Coalition.
About halfway into the speech, Trump began to talk about the passage of the Right to Try legislation that he signed into law last year. The new law allows people facing life-threatening conditions to receive experimental drugs that have not yet been approved by the FDA. He brought up onto the stage Natalie Harp, one of the first benefactors of the legislation.
Harp, a millennial, told the crowd that a medical error left her facing almost certain death from stage 2 bone cancer. “My good Samaritan, President Donald J. Trump, he saw me there and he didn’t walk by. He stopped," she said.
— Chick-fil-A named America's No. 1 favorite fast-food chain 4th consecutive year.
Christian-owned Chick-fil-A has been named the United States’ favorite fast-food restaurant for the fourth year in a row by The American Customer Satisfaction Index.
On a scale of 1 to 100, Chick-fil-A scored an 86, which was 1% below their rating last year. Behind them was Panera Bread at 81, and Arby’s, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Papa John’s, and Pizza Hut in a four-way tie at 80.
