Christians worldwide united for Orphan Sunday, where congregations not only learned about the plight of orphaned children, but also discovered ways they can help in their own communities and globally.

The first Orphan Sunday was held at a church in Zambia 11 years ago and expanded to events in two countries in 2009.

Jedd Medefind, president of Christian Alliance for Orphans, told The Christian Post on Friday. “It's beautiful to see how God has taken a simple idea born in a small church in Zambia and used it to grow, love and care for orphans and foster youth among Christians all over the world."

The number of children orphaned worldwide is 140 million, according to estimates from Christian Alliance for Orphans.

The Orphan Sunday campaign, which is led by the Christian Alliance for Orphans, has more than 180 participating organizations, including: Family Life, Bethany Christian Services, Show Hope, Focus on the Family, Buckner International and Compassion International.

This year’s theme for Orphan Sunday was “God sets the lonely in families,” from Psalm 68:6.

After more than a decade since the organization’s last general assembly, Bishop Efraim Tendero, secretary general of the World Evangelical Alliance, announced Friday at their latest gathering, that they are now ready to reach every nation of the world with the Gospel through strategic partnerships and focus.

“The WEA’s role is to unite and empower evangelicals globally by giving identity, voice and platform in every nation and that vision guides us in everything that we do,” Tendero said in an address to representatives from 92 countries who gathered at the Sentul International Convention Center in Bogor, Indonesia, for the seven-day General Assembly.

Over 80 evangelical leaders call for restitution-based immigration reform

Over 80 evangelicals signed onto a statement this week calling for a restitution-based pathway for immigrants unlawfully residing in the United States to be granted legal permanent residency.

On Wednesday evening, the “Evangelical Call for Restitution-Based Immigration Reform” was announced in Washington, D.C., by the Evangelical Immigration Table, a coalition of evangelical organizations that support comprehensive immigration reform.

The new statement proposes a way forward for people who are in the U.S. illegally without resorting to either mass deportation or amnesty.

“We support a process of restitution (not amnesty) where violation of law is admitted to and significant fines/penalties are paid by immigrants (in installments over a period of seven years) who came illegally (or overstayed a visa) as adults, leading to a pathway to Legal Permanent Residency if qualifications are met,” the statement reads.

Under the plan, immigrants who were brought to the U.S. unlawfully or overstayed a visa as children would also go through a process to get onto a pathway to legal residency if qualifications are met.

Notable signatories include Russell Moore, head of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission; Leith Anderson, retiring president of the National Association of Evangelicals; the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference; Douglas Birdsall, the honorary chair of the Lausanne Movement; and Shirley Hoogstra, president of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.

Keith Getty: Modern worship is 'utterly dangerous,' causing 'de-Christianizing of God’s people'

Keith Getty is warning church leaders about the modern worship movement, which he describes as one of “cultural relevance” that is “utterly dangerous” and is contributing to the “de-Christianizing of God’s people.”

In an interview with The Christian Post, Getty said many modern worship songs focus on emotionalism rather than sound doctrine and Scriptural truths. This, he said, leads to a generation ill-equipped to understand or defend the Christian faith.

“An authentic generation doesn’t begin with catharsis; it has to begin with an authentic picture of the God of the Bible,” he explained. “Over 75 percent of what are called the great hymns of the faith talk about eternity, Heaven, Hell, and the fact that we have peace with God. Yet, less than 5 percent of modern worship songs talk about eternity.”

“Many worship songs are focused on this Earth,” Getty said. “I believe that the modern worship movement is a movement for cultural relevance. It’s a de-Christianizing of God’s people. It’s utterly dangerous. I have no quibbles saying, ‘Enough is enough.’ This can’t happen to build an authentic generation.”

Moloch statue of child sacrifice on display at Colosseum, holy site for Christian martyrs

A statue of the pagan deity Moloch, to which children were sacrificed in the ancient world, is now stationed at the entrance to the Colosseum in Rome, which has been designated as a sacred site because of the Christian martyrs who died there.

The statue of Moloch outside the Colosseum was billed as celebration of Carthaginian culture and art

The ancient Roman stadium was declared a sacred site in 1749 by Pope Benedict XIV in official church policy.

Many faithful Catholics are outraged that a representation of the pagan god sits outside a place where Christians were brutally tortured and killed.

The large-scale exhibition will run through March 29, 2020.
