In an emotional scene following the family impact statements at ex-Dallas police officer Amber Guyger’s sentencing, Judge Kemp gave Guyger her personal Bible she kept with her at the courthouse and used everyday. Kemp opened the Bible and told Guyger: "This is your job for the next month. Right here. John 3:16."

A jury found Guyger guilty of murder in the first-degree for fatally shooting Botham Jean last year when she entered his apartment. On Wednesday, she was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Guyger was Botham's downstairs neighbor and testified that she entered his apartment by mistake following her 14-hour shift and believed Botham was a burglar. During the trial, the jury heard testimony from neighbors about how often they got lost and wound up "on the wrong floor of the South Side Flats where Guyger and Jean lived," The Dallas Morning News reported.

Trump admin sued over new refugee executive order; advocates want clarity

The International Refugee Assistance Project has filed a lawsuit seeking answers on how President Donald Trump’s executive order giving states and localities the ability to block refugee resettlement in their communities was created.

The order was issued on the same day the administration announced it would reduce the annual refugee resettlement ceiling to a historic low of 18,000. The legal complaint claims the order “gives state and local governments an unprecedented power” to refuse to accept refugees in their jurisdictions.

— Virginia law requiring ultrasound before abortion upheld by federal judge

A Virginia law requiring abortion clinics to show women the ultrasound image of their baby 24 hours before an abortion has been upheld by a federal judge. U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson issued the ruling on Monday as a result of a lawsuit challenging four Virginia laws regulating abortion in the state.

The law also states that only physicians are legally authorized to performs abortions. Two other disputed laws that mandated all second-trimester abortions be performed at licensed outpatient facilities and that abortion clinics meet the same basic health and safety standards as surgical hospitals were stuck down.

Esther Ishaku Katung was kidnapped along with her husband and other church members of the Evangelical Church Winning All congregation in Bagoma last month. The herdsmen broke into their home on church’s premises as they slept, according to Morning Star News. While the couple initially escaped, Esther was recaptured by the herdsmen.

The herdsmen then demanded a ransom of $690 from her family. After receiving the payment, the abductors revealed they had already murdered her.
