Controversial televangelist Benny Hinn renounced the prosperity gospel this week. During a Monday night service that was broadcast live, Hinn said he was correcting his own theology and that he sees the Bible differently now compared to 20 years ago.

The now former prosperity gospel preacher said, “It’s an offense to say give $1,000. I think it’s an offense to the Holy Spirit to place a price on the Gospel. I’m done with it. I will never again ask you to give $1,000 or whatever amount, because I think the Holy Ghost is just fed up with it.”

— 6-y-o boy uses birthday money to help hurricane evacuees

A 6-year-old boy from South Carolina used the money he had saved up for a trip to Disney World to help Hurricane Dorian evacuees with food and water.

Jermaine Bell, whose birthday is on Sept. 8, bought hundreds of hot dogs, chips and water to hand out to evacuees. The boy also offered prayer.

After devastating the Bahamas, Hurricane Dorian moved north and spared Florida of any major damage. It lashed the coast of the Carolinas on Thursday as a Category 2 hurricane.

— At hearing, Planned Parenthood staffer admits to supplying aborted baby parts to broker

Court proceedings are underway to determine whether David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt, who published undercover videos exposing Planned Parenthood's financial dealings with fetal body parts, should face a criminal trial.

This week, a California Planned Parenthood staffer, identified as Doe 7, testified that she regularly provided fetal tissue from the abortions she did. The employee also said she heard of cases in which StemExpress, which is a biotech firm known for its procurement of fetal body parts for research purposes, was involved and money was exchanged.

Daleiden and Merritt are charged with 15 counts of felony invasion of privacy and are accused of creating a fake biotech firm in order to pose as buyers interested in fetal tissue. They recorded conversations at National Abortion Federation meetings in 2014 and 2015.

Daleiden argues that Planned Parenthood is being shielded from accountability for its crimes.

— Episcopal Church sees greater membership decline

The Episcopal Church saw a greater decline in members and average worship attendance in 2018 than in 2017.

Active baptized members decreased from approximately 1.712 million in 2017 to 1.676 million. The 36,000-member drop is larger than the previous two years.

Also in 2018, average Sunday worship attendance declined by about 23,500 people, making it the largest drop the denomination has seen since at least 2014.

— Research on ‘resilient’ young Christians

New research from Barna revealed that amid a high dropout of young people from the church, those who stay have a resilient faith.

According to Barna President David Kinnaman, the dropout rate has grown from 59% to 64% among people ages 18 to 29, after having been actively involved in church during their childhood and youth.

But 10% of young believers are what Kinnaman calls “resilient disciples.” Most of these believers say worship is a way of life and not just an event. They also say following Christ excites them and they see the church as a place where they feel they belong.
