A 9-year-old has given birth to a baby girl in Mexico, according to new reports out from the region today, in a case that has shocked the nation.

The little girl, who is called Dafne in reports, would have become pregnant when she was just 8-years-old. She gave birth to a healthy daughter on Jan. 27, 2013 in Jalisco, Mexico after finding out just two months ago that she was pregnant.

Despite her extremely young age, the 9-year-old girl and her new daughter were both healthy and have already been allowed to return home, Director of Zoquipan Hospital, Dr. Enrique Rabago, has said in a press conference on Wednesday.

The father of the child is thought to be a 17-year-old boy, and authorities have confirmed that he is still being hunted and may be criminally charged for having a sexual relationship with such a young girl.

However, Lino Ginzalez Corona, spokesperson at Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office, has said, "Due to her young age, we don't know if she is being entirely truthful."

Corona was referring to the story given to authorities by the 9-year-old girl, who gave details of an alleged teenage lover, saying that the boy and her were in love.

The spokesperson confirmed that authorities believe the 17-year-old boy and the 9-year-old girl were dating, however, no further information about their relationship was given.

Corona also added that the girl "did not realize that she was pregnant until the seventh month."

According to the young mother, her boyfriend has already asked her to move in with him so that they could raise their child together, however, she explained that she refused the offer.

Corona then also confirmed that the boyfriend "decided to leave town two months ago."

The boy is currently being searched for by authorities, who want to hear his side of the story before confirming what their next actions will be.

Corona did confirm to media, however, that the state prosecutor is "still open to the possibility of rape or child sex abuse."

Reports have said that the young girl was given a C-Section to give birth to the baby girl.

"Due to her young age and to the fact that her body was not ready to give birth," Dr. Rabago has said. "The medical team decided a C-Section was the best option."
