Catonsville Shooting: Police Officer, 36, Killed Serving Warrant

A Baltimore county police officer and father of two was fatally shot while serving an arrest warrant at a Catonsville home.

Jason Schneider, 36, a 13-year-veteran of the Baltimore police force, was shot and killed after entering a Catonsville home Wednesday as part of a tactical unit. Schneider and other officers were issuing a search warrant at the Winter's Lane home, which had been previously linked to a shooting that took place last week on the same street local police said.

While combing through rooms, Schneider turned a corner to enter a different room when he was shot. Schneider returned fired and injured the suspect. Both officer and suspect were taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center where Schneider was pronounced dead, according to The Baltimore Sun. Police did not identify the suspect on Wednesday, who remains in critical condition.

"During a well-prepared police event, Officer Schneider was killed in the line of duty and we deeply mourn his loss," County Executive Kevin Kamenetz said told The Sun. "I can only tell you that we don't always appreciate what our police do for us every day but it's times like this when we know how grateful we are for their bravery and their sacrifice."

Schneider had served as a member of the police tactical unit since 2004. Chief James W. Johnson referred to him as "a leader within that unit."

"This is a terrible loss for Baltimore County," he explained.

The group of people discovered in the home where the warrant was served was aware that the men entering were officers and had begun to flee at their arrival, the Sun reported. In a separate interview with WBALTV, Kamentez referred to Schneider as a "quiet hero."

"He did what he and every other people officer in this department do: Put his uniform on and risked his life to protect our county," he said.
