CBS Confirms 'Salvation' Will Return for Season 2

CBS has officially renewed the drama series "Salvation" for another season. Earlier this week, the network confirmed that the sci-fi series by Alex Kurtzman would return next year for its sophomore season, which will consist of 13 episodes in total.

Owned by CBS, "Salvation" debuted in July and had a generally favorable performance throughout its run. The series centers on MIT grad student Liam Cole (Charlie Rowe) and tech superstar Darius Tanz (Santiago Cabrera), who both discover that an asteroid is set to collide with the planet Earth in a few months and deliver this staggering news to Pentagon official Grace Barrows (Jennifer Finnigan). With the added threat of an impending nuclear war, the three team up with Secretary of Defense Harris Edwards (Ian Anthony Dale) in finding a way to stop the nuclear war while preventing the asteroid from hitting the planet.

According to reports, most of the original cast members are set to return for the new season, including Cabrera, Finnigan, Rowe, Dale, Jacqueline Byers, Shazi Raja, Erica Luttrell, and Rachel Drance. Directed by Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro and executive-produced by Kurtzman, the debut season ended its run last Sept. 20.

CBS Television Studios produces the show in partnership with Kurtzman-owned Secret Hideout. The next season will reportedly see the return of the original showrunners and producers, including Kurtzman's co-producers Heather Kadin, Stuart Gillard, and Peter Lenkov.

While CBS has already decided on the fate of "Salvation," it has yet to confirm whether its other summer scripted series will return for another season. One of its series whose future is still up in the air is "Zoo," which was announced alongside the first season of "Salvation" last summer and was based on a book by James Patterson.

CBS has yet to announce the premiere date of "Salvation" season 2.
