Christian Music Culture Infecting Secular

Christian music exploded throughout both Christian and general markets this year like a bomb, bringing talented artists from different labels and styles together under one common purpose of spreading the culture of Christ. The Billboards tell us the story how Christian music is crossing the great divide between Christian music and mainstream music.

Showing that there is more to outside appearances, Forefront records artist Stacie Orrico demonstrated with her hit single, “Stuck,” that a 17-year-old can sing with musical maturity. The lyrics in another hit single, “(There’s Gotta Be) More to Life,” gave Orrico a spot in the top five on the Mainstream Top 40 chart.

Who can leave out MercyMe's touching song, "I Can Only Imagine." The single made it big on mainstream AC stations and landed atop the Billboard Singles Sales chart. Mainstream AC stations are becoming a home of the singles of more and more Christian artists such as Pillar, Relient K, Natalie Grant, and Steve Curtis Chapman. Though the songs which are sung by these artists have Christ-centered lyrics, the presence of these songs on Mainstream AC stations is dominating over the songs which do not sing with the viewpoint of faith.

Both cultures are beginning to diffuse not just one way but into each other. Country singer Randy Travis scored thumbs up with the hit “Three Wooden Crosses,” which gained the position of Country Music Assn. and Christian Country Music Assn.'s song of the year. He also released his third album Worship and Faith.

Travis joins George Jones and Billy Ray Cyrus to stand among those who have albums which made it among the Top Contemporary Christian Albums.
